The Pilates Reformer and its Use in Physical Therapy

October 7, 2025

In our latest blog we discussed the benefits of utilizing physical therapy for recovery. Continuing to honor National Physical Therapy Month, we will be discussing one of the powerful tools we utilize at Orthopaedic Associates in our therapy clinic to help aid in rehabilitation and recovery.

What is the Pilates Reformer?

The Pilates Reformer looks a bit like a bed with a sliding platform (called the carriage), springs for resistance and adjustable straps or bars. Patients perform guided exercises while lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing on the carriage. The combination of controlled movement and resistance makes it a versatile tool for therapy.

How the Pilates Reformer Helps with Rehabilitation

1. Low-Impact Strengthening

The springs on the Pilates Reformer provide resistance without adding stress to joints. This makes it an ideal option for patients recovering from knee, hip or back injuries who need gentle yet effective strengthening.

2. Improves Flexibility and Mobility

Many injuries lead to stiffness and limited range of motion. The Pilates Reformer allows patients to safely stretch and lengthen muscles while also strengthening them.

3. Core Stability and Posture Support

A strong core is important for protecting the spine and supporting overall movement. Exercises utilizing the Pilates Reformer target the deep stabilizing muscles of the core, helping to improve posture, reduce back pain and prevent future injuries.

4. Customizable for All Levels

The Pilates Reformer can be adjusted to each patient’s ability and goals. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, working through chronic pain or regaining mobility after a sports injury, the equipment provides adaptable resistance and positioning to match their capability level.

5. Engages Mind-Body Connection

Pilates emphasizes controlled, mindful movement. Using the Pilates Reformer encourages patients to focus on alignment, breathing and body awareness – all of which support safe recovery and better long-term movement patterns.
