Common Myths about Orthopaedics
December 10, 2025
The field of orthopaedic care can be confusing and unknown. Or maybe you have heard things about it that you are wondering are true or not. At Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth, we know that uncertainty can make people delay care or feel nervous about seeking help. That’s why we’re breaking down some of the most common myths about orthopaedics, so you can feel confident and informed about your health.

Myth #1: If you see an orthopaedic doctor, you’ll need surgery.
The truth: Surgery is just one tool we use, and it’s often not the first one! Many of our patients improve with nonsurgical treatments like physical or occupational therapy, medication, injections, or lifestyle adjustments. Our goal is always to help you recover in the least invasive way possible. However, surgery may be recommended when those options don’t provide enough relief or if the condition requires a more direct solution to restore function.
Myth #2: Orthopaedic care is only for athletes.
The truth: While one of our specialties is Sports Medicine, helping athletes recover from sports injuries, orthopaedic care is for people of all activity levels and ages. From a child who breaks a bone on the playground, to an adult with arthritis, to a grandparent struggling with hip pain – orthopaedics covers the full spectrum of bone, joint and muscle health.
Myth #3: Orthopaedic care is only for major injuries.
The truth: We treat everything ranging from everyday sprains and strains to long-term conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Even small issues can affect your daily life, and addressing them early can prevent bigger problems in the future.
Myth #4: Joint pain is just a normal part of aging and nothing can be done.
The truth: It is common to feel more aches and stiffness as we age, BUT that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Orthopaedic specialists can help relieve pain, improve mobility, and keep you active. This can be done through a variety of options including exercise guidance, joint injections, or (when necessary) joint replacement surgery.
Myth #5: Rest is best for orthopaedic injuries/exercise always makes it worse.
The truth: While rest is important, appropriate physical activity and exercise, when guided by a professional, can actually be crucial for restoring bones and muscles, maintaining strength, and preventing further deterioration.
Myth #6: Orthopaedic treatment will keep me from doing the activities I love.
The truth: Our goal is the exact opposite! Whether you want to get back on the court, play with your kids without pain, or simply climb stairs with ease, orthopaedic care is designed to help you regain independence and enjoy life again. When it comes to concerns about the recovery process, advances in minimally invasive techniques and post-operative care have significantly shortened and improved recovery times – getting you back to doing what you love, safely and efficiently.
