Preventing Sports Injuries Through Physical Therapy
October 28, 2024
Earlier this month we discussed how physical therapy can help patients dealing with chronic pain get back to living a life in motion. We are continuing to honor and celebrate National Physical Therapy Month in this blog by talking about the ways PT can also prevent sports injuries and aid in rehab if injury does occur.
Injuries can sideline athletes of all levels, and while some are sadly unavoidable, many can be prevented through proactive measures seen in physical therapy!
The Role of PT in Injury Prevention
Assessment and Evaluation
Our therapy team at Orthopaedic Associates offers various assessments utilized to prevent injury. These involve evaluating an athlete’s movement patterns, flexibility, strength, and overall physical condition. After identifying any areas of weakness or imbalance, our therapists can recommend specific exercises and strategies to help reduce injury risk. Current assessments we offer include:
Functional Capacity Assessments: A 2-day standardized test to evaluate a patient’s ability to perform work abilities.
Running Assessments: Designed to analyze a runner’s performance in order to help provide and create personalized running plans.
Education and Awareness
A crucial part of injury prevention, our PTs teach athletes about proper techniques, body mechanics, and the importance of warming up and cooling down. By creating a better understanding of their bodies, athletes can make empowered and informed decisions that enhance their performance while reducing the risk of injury.
When Injury Happens
If an injury does occur, physical therapy plays a vital role in rehabilitation and getting athletes back in their game. At Orthopaedic Associates, our therapists work alongside our surgeons (if surgery is needed) to provide a team approach to care. Here are the ways our team helps in the recovery process.
Pain Management
Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to reduce pain and promote healing.
Therapeutic Modalities: Application of heat, ice, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation to alleviate pain and inflammation.
Restoring Function
Our goal in rehab is to restore full function. We guide patients through exercises designed to rebuild strength, improve flexibility, and restore range of motion. We will also gradually reintroduce sport-specific movements during recovery.
Preventing Recurrence
We also implement strategies to prevent future injuries. This may include continued strength training, flexibility work, and education on proper techniques and body mechanics.
Techniques and Modalities
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy techniques, including joint mobilization and soft tissue manipulation, are used to relieve pain, improve circulation, and enhance mobility.
Modalities
Briefly mentioned under pain management, our team utilizes the following modalities.
Cryotherapy and Thermotherapy: Ice and heat applications to manage inflammation and pain.
Ultrasound: For tissue healing and pain relief.
Electrical Stimulation: To reduce pain and stimulate muscle contractions. As you can see, physical therapy plays a huge role in keeping athletes safe, healthy, and continuing to play the sports they love.
