Each imaging technology has its strengths.

X-rays are excellent for evaluating bones, fractures, and arthritis. MRI provides highly detailed images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and other soft tissues. However, both X-rays and MRIs capture static images, providing a snapshot in time.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound offers something different. It allows us to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joints, and other soft tissues dynamically and in real time.

Imagine a patient with shoulder pain that only occurs when raising their arm overhead. Standard X-rays or even an MRI may not clearly identify the source of the problem because the images are taken while the patient is lying still.

With ultrasound, we can examine the shoulder while the patient performs the exact movement that causes discomfort. Watching the muscles, tendons, and surrounding structures move in real time allows us to reproduce symptoms, pinpoint the source of pain, and arrive at a more precise diagnosis.

Following a total knee or total hip replacement, MRI images are often affected by metal implants, creating distortion and artifacts that can obscure nearby soft tissues. Ultrasound is not impacted by these metal implants in the same way, allowing us to clearly evaluate surrounding tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures with remarkable detail.
